Valencia attacker Rodrigo Moreno has insisted that he never considered playing for Brazil as he always dreamed of representing Spain at international level.
The 23-year-old was born in Rio de Janeiro, but has been capped at Under-21 and U-23 level for Spain.
Rodrigo has not made any official appearances for the reigning European champions as of yet, but he received a call-up for the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against Slovakia and Luxembourg and will no longer be available for Brazil if he features for Spain.
The former Benfica star has no regrets over his decision to play for Spain, though, and is looking forward to a potential official debut.
"I never thought about playing for Brazil. I grew up in Spain as a player and as a person," Rodrigo told Goal.
"I have been playing for Spain since the U-19 team. I wouldn't feel comfortable playing for Brazil and would rather wait for the chance to play for Spain. Playing for Brazil was never an option.
"Even if I don't make my debut for Spain this week and Brazil then want me, I would say no. I have never had any doubts."
Some have questioned whether the ex-Real Madrid youngster fits into Vicente del Bosque's style of play, but he is confident he will get his chance.
"I have yet to talk with Del Bosque about what he expects from me. He will make a decision on the style of play and pick the players to go with it.
"It's true that this team is renowned for its Tiki-Taka style, but there are always more options. Spain have had some great strikers, too, with Fernando Torres and David Villa."
Rodrigo joined Valencia from Benfica ahead of the 2014-15 campaign and the Mestalla side have been in sublime form so far this season.
Nevertheless, they are not getting carried away and are not thinking about emulating Atetico Madrid and win La Liga just yet.
"We have started very well and have been exceeding expectations. We are keeping our feet on the ground, though. We are not thinking about doing what Atletico did and challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid for the title. Our main goal is to qualify for European football.
"I am feeling very well at Valencia. I really wanted to return to Spain. Lisbon was not bad either, but it's just not the same. It's a new challenge and I hope we can all do a good job."
The attacker enjoyed one season at Real Madrid, but failed to break into the first team and was eventually sold to Benfica. He does not feel any bitterness toward the Santiago Bernabeu side, though.
"I am grateful for all the chances I got. I have no hard feelings toward Real Madrid or toward anyone else. Madrid are a big club and I felt happy at Benfica, too. Sometimes a door closes and another one opens."
