Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria,DSFN, begins its 2014 awareness week with a focus on advocacy, awareness, fund raising, and celebrating uniqueness of people with Down Syndrome in Nigeria and the world at large.
Theme for this year’s programme “Keep Calm, I Can”, according to the National President, DSFN, Mrs. Rose Mordi, will create the requisite awareness about Down Syndrome.
Mordi said the week promises to be exhilarating, educative, enlightening and engaging. An 8-kilometre Charity Walk will take place around from Cele Bus Stop to Isolo, to be followed by an International Seminar to discuss medical, educational, and socio-economic issues of Down Syndrome in Nigeria is scheduled for Tuesday 21st October, 2014 at Grange School, Harold Shodipo Crescent, Ikeja.
Some of the speakers that would be presenting papers include, Professor F.A Oredugba , Medical Practioner at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idi-Araba who will be talking on Dental Check ; Mrs Sonubi (Legal Practioner) will speak on “Domestic Violence” while Dr G.T Ijarojbe will touch on the topic “ Mental Aspect-children with Down syndrome”. Another speaker Mr Adeleke Philips will enlighten the audience on “The Role of Special Teachers in taking care of Children with Special Needs”
A high profile fundraising Dinner and Awards evening will hold on Saturday, 25th October 2010 at the Yoruba Tennis Club, Onikan Lagos. The occasion also serves as a platform where we honor partners and sponsors of the Foundation who are partnering with us all these years. The 2014 Down-to-Earth magazine of the Foundation will be unveiled.
The magazine highlights some of the successes recorded this year which include the participation of the foundation in marking the maiden edition of the Dance Marathon, Special Talent Hunt, inauguration of the Down Syndrome Ibadan Chapter in 2013 and experiences from the 2014 Down Syndrome National Congress held in, Indianapolis, United States of America.
