A 36-year-old mother of four, Ebele Okeke, was yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, for allegedly stealing N15 million under false pretence.
The defendant, an alleged Facebook scammer, from Nkpor, Onitsha, in Anambra State, was docked before Magistrate Adeola Adedayo on a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining by false pretence.
The Police prosecutor, Inspector Marcus Okon, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence in 2012, at Allen Avenue in Ikeja area of Lagos.
Okon said she obtained the said sum from one Sunday Okpere, with pretence that if he becomes her business partner, she would use the money to buy items to sell and make profit from it, which she knew to be false.
According to the prosecutor, the offence is punishable under Sections 312 and 285 of the criminal law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
Earlier, the defendant had pleaded not guilty to the two charges against her.
The defendant’s counsel G. Ojakovo, who prayed the court to grant the defendant bail in the most liberal terms, told the court that the charge before it was meant to divert attention from the initial case filed by the defendant at the Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi.
However, Magistrate Adedayo told the defendant’s counsel to file a formal bail application before the court could grant the defendant bail and adjourned the matter to November 3.
