Police Barracks in Lagos state have been identified to be in advanced state of dilapidation and some of them could come down any moment like the foreign gust house of the Synagogue Church of all Nations did September 12.
However, in an effort to check cases of collapsed building, Lagos State Government in a recent statement identified 1,760 illegal structures and 140 distressed buildings across the state.
The government while lamenting that distressed buildings posed threat to safety of residents’ in the state, explained that of the total illegal structures identified, 513 were sealed for contravening the state building regulations.
As at last count; “482 stop work notices were served on the owners of the illegal structures, for violating the building procedure in the state. 46 demand notices were served on building insurance, to ensure that the structures comply with the required standards.
“140 buildings were identified as distressed, 81 have been recommended for pundits test, while 10 structures in Sanusi Olusi Street, Agarawu, Adeniji Adele in Lagos Island, Oke-Afa, Isolo axis, Alaka in Surulere, Amukoko in Apapa Local Government and Oworonshoki axis were removed”.
Governor Babtunde Fashola of Lagos State, at forum recently, accused owners of properties and developers of penchant disregard to building ethics and regulations as a major cause of building collapse.

Water surge imminent in Ikorodu areas
Lagos State Government has urged residents in some flood plain areas of Ikorodu on the need to be vigilant and keep a safe distance of 50 meters from the river boundary on both sides of the road following rise in water level noticed around the axis as a result of discharges from adjoining states.
Some of the identified affected areas include: Ajegunle, Owode-Onirin, Owode Elelede, in Ikorodu, and environs.
While giving the red alert, the state Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, in a statement yesterday, explained that the rise in water level was as a result of runoff meeting with high tides thereby, locking the flow from discharging into the Lagos Lagoon which has caused the overflow that had contained itself presently within 30.00m of the Ogun Riverbanks.
He however, advised residents not to panic but be on high alert over the spread of water noticed, with an assurance that the Office of Drainage Services Engineers in the Ministry of the Environment are already working assiduously to ensure that there is no overflow.
Road expansion project: Lagos allays fear of mass demolition of properties
Following palpable fear among residents, Lagos State Government has assured that plans to expand the Gaskiya-College and Sari-Iganmu Roads in the Orile Iganmu area of the state would not result in the mass demolition of houses within the area.
Gaskiya College Road is at present a 2-lane 1,520m long carriageway with an average width of 8m long and a 55m long bridge component.
The 3.2 kilometres road which is expected to be completed in 20 months will improve road network and enhance interconnectivity around the area.
Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat gave the assurance at a recent stake-holder’s meeting with inhabitants of the community, stating that government had no plans to do extensive demolition so as to expand the road from the present eight metres to 13.4 kilometeres.
