GOVERNOR Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, yesterday, called on Nigerians to resist attempts by unscrupulous politicians promoting religious and primodial sentiments to divide the country for personal aggrandisement as Nigeria marks her 54th Independence anniversary today.
Similarly, Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu implored Nigerians to use the independence anniversary to embrace a new spirit of patriotism, sacrifice and commitment towards strengthening the unity and socio-economic and political well being of the country.
Okorocha in his message to mark the anniversary, said “I urge Nigerians to continue to believe in the unity of the country and resist the attempts by certain political leaders to use religion and other ethnic considerations to divide them, to achieve their own personal goals.” He added that at 54 the emphasis should have been on the things that would unite us as a people and as a nation, and not on those things that would rather polarize the country along religious and ethnic lines.
On his part, Governor Chime in a message by his Chief Press Secretary, Chukwudi Achife, said contemporary events and circumstances in the country today were enough to compel Nigerians to pursue ideals and visions that could only foster greater national integration and advancement.
