The 13th OML 58 Football tournament kicked off Thursday at the Okeh Grammer School, Elelewon Okinali Rivers State after a colourful opening ceremony with dance and culture on display.
The opening match was between Idu FC and Akabta FC.
Sixteen teams drawn from OML 58 host communities of TOTAL and representing their respective communities will vie for honours in the competition.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 2014 organising committee in Obite, the Rivers State Community Affairs Services Manager, Engineer Okechukwu Obara charged players of the participating teams to put up great performances, be of good character and be good ambassadors of their communities.
Engineer Obara said,”be reminded that this annual competition is a veritable shop window for talented players who desire to pursue a career in professional football. Scouts will be present during matches, and over the years, players discovered from this tournament are enjoy blossoming careers afterwards”.
Chairman Organising Committee, Goodnews Mbonu tasked the participating teams to compete within the context of fairplay, sportsmanship and friendship.
Some players discovered from past editions of the tournament who now play professional football abroad include Nkemka Onuogba, Aginebu James, Chinonye Ogbugo and Chidiebe James Otto who all play professional Football in Romania.
